To fully appreciate how barbaric it is to strip-search a child you have to imagine yourself doing it. Justice Matters surveyed 112 people, we asked them to close their eyes and picture an 11-year-old child. We asked them to get a clear picture of the child, talking to them and engaging with them. Then we asked them to picture themselves forcing the child to strip in front of them. But not one of them could go through with it - just the thought of it was too confronting.

It was reported that girls under the age of 17 are 30 per cent more likely to be strip-searched. That is an alarming statistic considering most child sex predators are men.

We also asked what they would do if their job required them to strip-search a child and the majority said they would still refuse even if it meant losing their job. It raises a genuine question - what does it say about the police officers who are prepared to use their authority to strip-search a child?

There are also officers that have been charged with child sex offences. An investigation should be carried out to determine whether any officer who has been charged with a child sex offence has strip-searched a child. If it has happened, then we as a society should bear the unimaginable shame for allowing it.

The legislation should be changed immediately, there are other ways children can be searched without the need for police officers to conduct a strip search. There should also be an investigation into how this shameful legislation came about, whoever is responsible should be held to account.
